Course Content & Assessment

The Mathematics Faculty is well resourced and has 9 dedicated classrooms based on the top floor of E Building. The Faculty has the benefit of interactive whiteboards in every room and laptops and computers available to use in every classroom.

Students in all years will have the opportunity to be involved in activities such as The Cipher Challenge and the UK Maths Challenges. The QE Maths Faculty is always striving to develop new initiatives such as ‘The M Word’ and charity fund raising activities. We can also be found on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

In Years 9, 10 and 11, students work towards gaining their GCSE Mathematics qualification. The GCSE course is a linear course. This means that all examinations are taken at the end of Year 11. There is no Coursework or Controlled Assessment component for GCSE Mathematics. The syllabus followed is Edexcel Linear Assessment (1MA0) for Y11, Edexcel GCSE Mathematics (9-1) for Years 9 and 10.

All students are required to study GCSE Mathematics. The curriculum focusses on Number, Shape and Measure, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion and Data Handling with a particular emphasis on applying mathematical skills to problem solving and functional tasks relevant to everyday life. The course provides a strong foundation of skills which enable students to make progress across a number of different subjects, such as Science, Geography and Business, as well as GCSE Mathematics itself.
Students’ GCSE grades are made up from three examinations and we regularly provide opportunities for students to prepare for their final exams through use of Key Questions and End of Term assessments during the course. All students are encouraged to set themselves targets for improvement and we have a number of online resources, such as Maths Watch and PiXL Maths App, available to help students with their revision.
Alongside GCSE Mathematics, we offer additional qualifications in GCSE Statistics and AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics which help further develop students’ understandings of Mathematical concepts in preparation for Post 16 Studies. We recommend that any student who wishes to study A-Level Mathematics should take one of these qualifications.
