Course Content & Assessment
Religious Studies is taken by all students as part of their preparation for life in a multi-cultural society. It is a legal requirement under the Education Act. The aim is to help each student think critically about religious, moral and social issues. Students develop verbal and written skills and should be able to express a well-informed and clearly thought out viewpoint. As part of the GCSE students will focus on exploring beliefs, practices and teaching of two world religions; Christianity and Islam. The course then explores ethical issues from religious viewpoints, themes included are:
Theme A: Relationships and families
Theme B: Religion and Life
Theme D: Religion, peace and conflict
Theme E: Religion, crime and punishment
All students will follow the Full GCSE RE syllabus starting from Year 9 and continuing throughout Years 10 and 11.
The new government guidelines require students to study at least two religions and an additional ethical studies unit.
Students will study Christianity and Judaism looking specifically at beliefs, teachings and practices.
The Ethical Studies unit contains Relationships, Life After Death, Good and Evil, Human Rights. Each topic studied applies different philosophical or ethical issues to a religious belief. Students are given the opportunity to explore key questions and evaluate different responses to them e.g. arguments for the existence of God or the ethics behind abortion. There is an emphasis on developing personal opinions and justifying these with clear and logical arguments whilst also applying the religious beliefs of the chosen religion.
RE at QE school has really influenced my thoughts and opinions on certain subjects and issues that I previously had not given much thought to. At GCSE we study the beliefs of different religions and their viewpoints, and explore ethical issues, such as should the death penalty be used as punishment? When I first started at QE I lacked confidence in sharing my thoughts and opinions in lessons. RE has helped me grow in confidence with developing these skills and I thoroughly enjoy the subject. RE at GCSE is thought provoking and challenging, developing useful written skills that help me with my other subjects and has encouraged me to share my ideas to my peers.

Entry Criteria & Progression
Requirements for Philosophy & Ethics at A level is a level 6 in English.
