The New BTEC Extended in Information Technology is a practical, work-related course designed to provide students with a broad range of knowledge about the IT systems environment. As such it offers valuable skills which could be used across a huge range of potential careers in business administration, finance, science, technology, manufacturing, sales and management—as well as in the IT industry itself.

The new BTEC Nationals in Information Technology use a combination of assessment styles that give our students the confidence they can use to apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace – and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their careers. The range of vocational assessments – practical and written – mean students can showcase their learning and achievements to best effect when they take their next step, whether that’s supporting applications to higher education courses or potential employers.

This qualification is designed for learners who are interested in an introduction into the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT.
The BTEC National Award in IT builds on the experience of the BTEC First or a GCSE Computing although this is not essential. This is a Level 3 course that prepares students for a wide range of future careers or study – hardware, programming, office software or graphical specialisms.

During Year 12 students complete the 2 core Units Employability and Communication Skills, and Computer Systems which looks at how hardware and software work and interact with the user. All students will have the chance to build their own computer at cost price (starting around £180). This develops students to have the confidence to maintain and build computers and save themselves money.
